Methane Monitoring
Fluenta’s Chief Scientist, Dr Neil Bird, recently featured in the May 2025 edition of World Pipelines, outlining the growing urgency of methane emissions management and introducing Fluenta’s latest innovation, FlareSens.

In the article, Dr Bird emphasizes methane’s significant impact on climate change, noting, “Methane accounts for nearly a quarter of global warming observed today, making it an urgent priority for operators.” He underscores how new satellite data challenges past assumptions: “Traditional beliefs around flare combustion efficiency—typically assumed to be around 98%—are significantly overestimated, revealing substantial methane slip.”
Responding to these critical challenges, Fluenta has introduced FlareSens, a pioneering solution offering real-time, continuous monitoring of flare gas emissions. Dr Bird explains, “FlareSens provides precise, real-time measurements of flare emissions, enabling operators to identify and rectify inefficiencies swiftly and proactively.”
FlareSens integrates seamlessly with existing measurement instruments, delivering insights into gas composition and combustion efficiency, and providing early detection of fugitive emissions. “Our goal with FlareSens,” Dr Bird adds, “is to transform methane from an environmental liability into a manageable, controllable element of operations.”
The combination of advanced ground-based solutions like FlareSens with satellite technology creates a new level of accountability. “Satellite initiatives such as MethaneSat and Carbon Mapper are changing industry expectations,” Dr Bird notes. “Operators who embrace proactive monitoring can validate their emissions management against this independent satellite data, leading the industry in transparency and environmental responsibility.”
Fluenta invites operators across the oil, gas, and chemical sectors to engage with this emerging technology and collaboratively address the methane challenge.
