In 2020, Malaysia’s government-owned oil and gas company, Petronas, stated their aspirations to achieve net zero emissions by 2050 with the application of new technologies to reduce emissions. This included a focus on reducing and ultimately eliminating routine flaring.
To reduce flare gas volumes, the first step Petronas took was to ensure accurate and reliable measurement. This enabled them to fully understand flare gas volumes and how best to reduce these in their efforts to eliminate routine flaring. We were approached by Petronas through our partners, Krohne, to replace their old flare gas measurement solutions on their Resak platform. This was part of an upgrade project for the Resak offshore facility, which will become Malaysia’s first remotely controlled platform.
Measurement Issues
Typical issues with legacy and outdated flare gas meters include unstable measurement, spiking / paintbrushing of the flow reading, and general poor measurement due to the inability to cope with process conditions. These issues lead to costly errors, as volumes are over-reported, leading to fines and excess taxation. Poor quality data failed to give the operators the clarity they required to understand and reduce their flare gas volumes.
Fluenta provides unrivalled capabilities for flare gas measurement and is supported by a dedicated team of specialists. To ensure accurate and reliable flare gas measurement, Petronas reached out to upgrade their meters to Fluenta.
Fluenta’s Solution
Utilising our updated product range, we have successfully replaced many meters for major customers across the globe. Alongside our market-leading transducers, our assortment of connections and configurations ensures upgrading is as seamless as possible and is economically viable.
For Petronas, we used our 2” connections to install our TFS transducers and FGM 160 meters into their existing pipe system without the need for new spool pieces or other mechanical work. These connections, which also come in a 3” size, mean upgrading to a Fluenta system is easy and economical.
In this case, the configuration for both meters were single path, in a lateral-45 arrangement. For Bias-90 configurations, we offer our full market-leading FlarePhase range and TFS-55 transducers, so upgrading is as simple as installing our system into your current pipe network.
“Fluenta offered great services & commitments for the Resak platform flare meter upgrade project. Their engineers were knowledgeable and showed high competency in installing and commissioning the Fluenta meters. “Fluenta offered great services & commitments for the Resak platform flare meter upgrade project. Fluenta flare meters are now successfully commissioned and performing well, I believe Petronas has a headache free flare measurement in terms of performance and accuracy in line with their ongoing efforts to reduce emissions.”
Accurate and Reliable Measurement
Since upgrading, the Petronas team haven’t faced any further measurement issues, and the Fluenta meters are running reliably, producing accurate measurement data. With Fluenta’s support team and service engineers based in Malaysia on hand, we can offer localised, expert support should it be required.
